Carien - Teacher

Carien Profile Image

Carien found her love of dance at age 3 when she started ballet classes at her local Ballet school in South Africa. She continued her ballet training when she moved to New Zealand in 2000 with Jacqui Tieleman, as well as competing nationally at Rhythmic Gymnastics. She sat up to RAD Advanced 1 and Cecchetti Advanced 1 with Jacqui, and continued dancing with her until she left New Zealand.

After finishing high school at 17 Carien started part time training at Southern Ballet School under Artistic Director Lorraine Peters as well as attending University of Canterbury in Christchurch. She was the lead dancer and helped choreograph Middleton Grange’s ‘Oliver ‘(2009) and ‘Annie’(2011) productions, also performing in University of Canterbury’s MUSOC show of ‘Chicago’ (2012) and many shows for Southern Ballet and Jacqui Tieleman School of Ballet.

In 2013 Carien moved to Brisbane to commence study at Queensland National Ballet under Artistic Director Martyn Fleming, and this was when Carien first started studying in Contemporary Dance. She quickly fell in love with Contemporary Dance and changed her Advanced Diploma Major from Ballet to Contemporary.

She performed in many shows with QNB and in 2014 was the lead female in the Jazz piece ‘Warrior’ which placed 2nd at the Sydney Eisteddfod at the Sydney Opera House.

In 2014 she was accepted into Expressions Dance Company Summer Intensive course. She also auditioned and was accepted to perform with Expressions in the APMA week for their shows ‘Carmen Sweet’ and ‘R&J’ for six shows, as well as attending company classes and rehearsals for two weeks.

Carien graduated in December 2014 with a Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Ballet and Modern Dance.

In 2015 Carien continued attending classes at MAD Dance House in Brisbane, as well as getting married and travelling through Europe, before packing her bags and moving with her husband to Wollongong to join Austinmer Dance Theater for 2016.

Carien was invited to travel to Mexico for three weeks in June to train and work with Iratxe Ansa, which was an amazing, eye-opening experience for her. Carien loves teaching and is looking forward to sharing her experiences and training with the students at SCIPA!
